E-commerce Website Planning Checklist
Prepare product data, checkout requirements, shipping, taxes, policies, customer support and integrations before building an online store.
Define what can actually be purchased
List products, variants, prices, stock rules and the information a customer needs before ordering. Decide whether every item is sold directly or whether some require a quote. Those decisions shape the catalog and checkout more than the visual theme does.
Prepare the operating requirements
- Product images, descriptions, variants and availability
- Supported delivery or collection options
- Payment-provider accounts and refund workflow
- Shipping, tax and policy requirements reviewed by the responsible specialists
- Owners for orders, customer questions and catalog updates
Map the order after checkout
Decide where an order appears, who receives the notification and which system controls inventory. Check what happens when an item is unavailable or a payment is incomplete. Avoid assuming that connecting a payment button also solves fulfillment.
Test before accepting real orders
Use the provider-approved test environment to check normal, failed and canceled flows. Review confirmation messages, delivery details and the staff handoff. Keep testing separate from live charging and do not use real customer data unnecessarily.
Scope the store separately from a brochure site
Catalog operations and checkout introduce requirements beyond informational pages. Share the product count, variants and integrations when requesting an e-commerce quote. Provider subscriptions, transaction fees and operational responsibilities should remain visible in the plan.
