How to Choose Website Keywords for a Small Business

Choose useful website keywords by connecting real customer language, search intent, services, geography and the right destination page.

Begin keyword research with customer language

Write down the services customers ask for, the problems they describe and the locations the business genuinely serves. Use inquiry emails and conversations as a starting point. Internal product names may not be the words a new customer uses to search.

Separate research from hiring

Someone searching for a redesign checklist is learning what to review. Someone searching for website redesign services is closer to choosing a provider. A guide and a service page can address those different intentions without forcing both into the same sales message.

Map topics to pages

  • Group phrases that ask substantially the same question.
  • Choose an existing page when it already answers that need.
  • Create a new page only when you have distinct, useful content.
  • Record the primary topic and the next action for each page.

Use search data as context

Search Console can show queries for a site that already receives impressions. Research tools can suggest other phrasing, but a volume estimate is not a promise of inquiries. A relevant, narrower topic may serve the business better than a broad term unrelated to its offer.

Write naturally

Use the topic in the title and explanation where it fits. Do not repeat the exact phrase in every heading or link. The final check is whether a potential customer can read the page comfortably and find the answer they expected.
