How to Choose Images for a Business Website

Choose website images that support the message, have clear usage rights, fit responsive layouts and include appropriate alternative text.

Choose the image for the page purpose

A service image should help explain the work or its setting. A product image should show what the customer is evaluating. An unrelated stock photo may fill space without improving understanding, so start with the message before choosing an image style.

Check rights and representation

Use images the business owns or is licensed to publish in the intended context. Keep permission and licensing records with the asset inventory. Do not present stock people, generated scenes or illustrative work as actual clients, staff or completed projects.

Prepare useful files

  • Keep a suitable original for future crops.
  • Choose crops that work in both narrow and wide layouts.
  • Export sizes appropriate to the placement.
  • Compress files without losing necessary detail.
  • Avoid embedding important page text only inside an image.

Write alternatives based on purpose

An informative image needs text that conveys its relevant meaning. A decorative image can use an empty alternative so it does not interrupt assistive reading. A linked image needs an accessible name that explains the destination or action.

Review the final placement

Check that mobile cropping does not remove the important part, text remains legible over any background and the image does not delay the main content unnecessarily. Relevance, permission and usability matter more than using a large number of visuals.
